Prep 5 Visit the Water Bus

Much to the excitement of the P5 pupils, the NI Water Bus drove into the school grounds   on Wednesday 17th January to present an exciting programme covering a wide range of themes based on water and protecting our environment.

Subjects addressed included recycling responsibly, taking care of our litter, understanding how the water cycle works and the importance of drinking plenty of water to name a few!

On the upper deck of the bus, the girls were able to view the sugar content of popular soft drinks and during the second session on the lower deck, the girls were fascinated to hear how our water is treated and cleaned through different processes before it flows safely from  our drinking taps at home!

A Busy Term in Prep 5

It has been a busy half term in the Prep 5 classroom as we have enjoyed a trip outside the classroom and have welcomed visitors to share in our lessons too.

Music Morning

On Friday 17th September we travelled by bus to the School of Music to participate and perform in the Music Makers event with other local schools. Mrs Murray and the girls have been learning new songs and creating their own compositions for the last number of weeks.

In Art lessons in class, the girls created a colourful painting representing characters from the song “Stone Soup”, one of the pieces performed on the morning of the event. This Art work was displayed at the School of Music along with contributions from the other schools present. Marin also took to the floor to narrate a composed weather forecast and was accompanied by every girl in the class on a variety of instruments. The music and sounds created depicted the changing weather of course!

Stone Age Workshop

Another highlight for the girls has been our Stone Age workshop. As we embark on this new topic in class, the girls had the opportunity to experience a wide variety of different activities to give them a flavour of life at this time in history. Activities included: weaving, role play hunting, dressing up, pottery, fact finding, studying artefacts, fence making to name but a few! Look out for the photos on Seesaw.

Our thanks go to Rita and Michael from the Active Learning Company for a fantastic day!

We look forward to seeing parents and friends at our Christmas performances.

Kind regards

Mrs. Burnett

Autumn Art in Prep 5

Just before the half term break, Prep 5 girls took advantage of the sunny Autumnal weather and ventured into the school grounds on the hunt for natural materials to use in our Art and Craft lessons.

Each pair gathered leaves and seeds in an array of colours and returned to the classroom to set to work.

Pupils used the materials both to create a collage featuring an Autumn scene and to design a bookmark. Over the half term holiday, the bookmarks have been pressed and the pictures are ready to be displayed in the classroom. Well done, girls!

Prep 5 Fire Safety Visit

On Tuesday 24th October, Prep 5 pupils were delighted to welcome to the classroom, four  Fire Safety Officers from the Lisburn Road Fire Station. The firemen gave a very interesting and helpful presentation based on fire prevention in the home and how to react in the event of an emergency involving fire in the home.

The girls were introduced to a variety of fictional characters, each one sharing useful advice in an entertaining way. A lively question and answer session followed the presentation with many of the girls having the opportunity to share their concerns and to ask questions relating to fire safety.

As always, the highlight of the visit came at the end when each girl had permission to take control of the fire appliance’s hose and soak the playground! At this point, it was an appropriate time for the teacher and classroom assistant to take cover!

Through our Big Write sessions this half term, we have been learning how to set out instructions and rules and the girls were able to put what they had learned into practice  as they created their own set of fire safety rules.   A job well done!

Prep 5 girls take on new duties as Guardian Angels

As is the custom every year, the Prep 5 girls have taken on the important role of acting as guardian angels to the younger girls in Prep 1.

Before introductions were made, the Prep 5 girls got to work creating welcome cards featuring a photograph of themselves for each of their young charges. There was much excitement in our classroom as each girl was given the name of their Prep 1 pupil, before signing their card and preparing for the play session.

Both groups of girls from Prep 1 and Prep 5 assembled together in the Hall for a time of sharing, action songs and circle games.

The Prep 5 girls have pledged to be a helping hand and support for the younger girls, particularly in the playground and look forward with enthusiasm to carrying out this worthwhile role throughout the year.

Vets for Pets in Prep 5

On Wednesday 15th March, the Prep 5 girls were delighted to welcome to the classroom, Ms Carol Corscaden, a veterinary nurse from Vets for Pets.

The girls listened intently to a very informative talk about how best to care for their pets and were very interested to watch Carol demonstrate how pets are microchipped for their own safety.

At the end of the talk, the girls had the opportunity to ask questions which they had prepared in advance. Topics ranged from healthy eating and exercise to the most unusual pet Carol has had to treat!

The interest and enthusiasm shown by the girls was evident when a long queueformed in front of Carol at 3 o’clock and pupils had to be reminded that it was home time!

Prep 5 girls read to PS girls for Brilliant Book Week!

As part of Brilliant Book Week celebrations, the Prep 5 girls were delighted to pay a visit to the Pre-School room to read favourite stories to the younger girls.

Girls were paired with their younger counterparts and settled themselves in a quiet, comfortable spot before the chosen books were opened.

It was a great opportunity for the Prep 5 girls to practise their reading skills with a younger audience and to focus on reading with expression and clarity so that the younger girls would remain engaged and interested.

All girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to re-live their time at the start of their school career in Prep!

Fire Safety Awareness in Prep 5

On Tuesday 17th January the Prep 5 girls were delighted to welcome to the class, firemen fromthe Lisburn Road Fire Station.  The girls listened intently to the safety talk and were able to show their own knowledge during the question and answer session.

The highlight of the visit was the opportunity for the girls to fire water from the engine’s hose and to explore the fire engine itself!

There were some suggestions from the girls about soaking their teacher with the fire hose but the threat of double homework soon put a stop to that!

Our thanks go to Ian and the team for giving us such an informative and fun filled afternoon.

Early Man Workshop in Prep 5

On Tuesday 29th November, the Prep 5 girls were taken back in time to the era of the Stone Age as they spent the day exploring what life was like for the hunters and gatherers of that time. We were delighted to invite Rita and Michael from “Eventfull Days” to facilitate a wide variety of experiences for the girls.

Challenges included attempting to hunt a hairy mammoth with a spear, matching descriptions to photographs of tools, weaving, pot making and stone house building to name a few!

The time flew past as each group of girls eagerly approached each new challenge with enthusiasm.

The day concluded with the girls making their own flint headed spears and finally gathering around the fire in the playground to watch how bread was griddled over the flames.

Pippa’s cry of “This was the best day ever!” summed up the feelings of all the girls as they packed their bags at the end of a busy and eventful day!

Prep 5 Autumn Update

It is hard to believe we are at the end of our first month in Prep 5. All the girls have settled in very well and are looking forward to meeting their new charges in Prep 1 as they shortly take on the role of “Guardian Angels” for the younger girls.

The girls were delighted to be invited to accompany Mrs. Hrabovsky to the launch at Stormont of the new teaching resource “Our Innovators”. This resource starred some of our past pupils from Prep 7 who presented a short drama based on the life of our past headmistress and founder of Victoria College, Mrs. Margaret Byers.  We were pleased to receive very positive feedback from the staff at Stormont about the girls’ exemplary behaviour.

International Languages Week also provided new experiences for the girls as they had the opportunity to make crepes in class and participate in the challenge of creating an international meal on a plate as part of the celebrations. The wide variety of colourful culinary creations entered for the competition reflects the wealth of artistic talent in Prep 5!

Prep 5 Young Enterprise

Mrs Edgar, from Young Enterprise, visited Prep 5 to deliver the ‘Our City’ programme. The pupils identified the commercial zones, major public services and residential zones within a city. They discovered that cities are designed and planned in a purposeful way to help the people who live and work there. The pupils enjoyed the opportunity to work together to plan and build their own city and to design a new restaurant. This was a very engaging, hands-on, active learning session and the girls thoroughly enjoyed planning their own city.

Prep 5 City Planners are problem-solving as they discuss their city design.

On Thursday 10th March, the sun was shining as the P5 girls, along with Mrs. Burnett and Mrs. Armstrong, set off on foot to the Lisburn Road Library.

This visit was an opportunity for the girls to join the library and to borrow books for use in their class pet projects.

Maura, the librarian gave the girls an informative talk about the Dewey system of organising books and directed the girls to the fiction and non-fiction books.

The girls were delighted to hear that they could borrow up to nine books at a time and that their library cards could be used in all libraries in Northern Ireland.

The girls were able to use the information gained to help them create their own set of Fire Safety Rules during their Big Write session the following week. They were also encouraged to make sure they knew their own safety escape route at home in the event of a fire.

At the end of the visit Ciara from P5 was brave enough to model a very heavy fireman’s outfit, displaying all the safety features and gadgets!
