Science Week proved to be a great success in Prep 5. They discovered that air resistance was a force that slows things down. They designed a fair test and ensured the eggs were dropped from the same height, the same material was used for the parachute, the weight of the eggs were the same, the length of string from the parachute to the egg was the same length and the cushioning/ cup was the same. The independent variable would be the size of the parachute and the dependent variable was the rate at which fell. They realised that the larger the surface area of the parachute the slower it would fall and therefore the greater chance that their egg survive the fall!
The girls worked successfully in their teams as they planned, made and tested their parachute. They understood the term air resistance, and this knowledge was used and applied in their F1 in Primary Schools Challenge as the considered how the streamlined shape of the car would reduce the air resistance and enable the car to travel faster!
