Prep 6 have been busy this term. We had a fantastic Viking Day with the Ardglass Viking Association. We were lucky enough to have the Prep 6 Inchmarlo boys with us on our Viking day. Prep 6 were very excited about dressing up as Vikings. Our day was full of fun activities that made our Viking topic seem real. We got to have an adventure on an amazing Viking longship. The Ardglass Viking Association had built it by hand from scratch! We used the giant oars to row across the seas and we found out lots of information about Viking food, clothes and their lifestyle. We also became Viking warriors and received training from our Viking leaders, Shaun and Austin. We had to create an impenetrable Viking wall with our shields and had to train with our sword fighting. The Ardglass Vikings were fantastic and really made our Viking activities come to life. We are already looking forward to sailing on the seas with them on their Viking longship in the spring.
Prep 6 have the fantastic job of being the KS2 ‘Buddies.’ The Buddies play an important role in our school. They are an amazing help during break and lunch times because they monitor and sort the toys for outside play. They also help the little ones in Canteen by sitting with and serving the P1 and P2 classes.
Prep 6 have been very focused so far this year and take their responsibilities very seriously. Lots of our amazing Prep 6’s have organised games and looked after the P1’s and new pupils in the playground too.
Our Prep 6 trip to Greenhill YMCA was full of fun, laughs and lasting memories. The girls excelled at all our activities. They showed their adventurous side by diving into the lake during canoeing, guarding the ‘President’ in Lasertag, climbing like ‘Spiderman’ on the Climbing Wall and zipping through the trees on the Zipline. Prep 6 were also fantastic ‘roomies’ with midnight feasts (9pm), late night chats and giggles during our VIP Greenhill Cinema night. They also loved having the whole of Cocos to explore, eating lots of delicious ice-cream, telling jokes to Mrs Fallon, Mrs Dickson and Mrs Gilmore and walking through the woods in twilight.
Prep 6 made the residential unforgettable and we are certain more great memories will be made in our fantastic P6 year.
Prep 6 took a short break away from their AQE testing to enjoy some (snowy) orienteering. They worked in small groups to find titles and authors of popular novels. This activity was part of our World Book Day celebrations and was delivered by Beverley from ‘Sustrans Active Schools.’
Prep 6 enjoyed 3 days of outdoor pursuits in Greenhill YMCA, Newcastle (Co. Down). They learnt a lot about teamwork, leadership and how to ‘face their fears’ as they participated in many activities including canoeing, orienteering, laser tag, zip lining, team games, adventure rope courses and archery.
Prep 6 have been learning about all the features of Viking long ships. They created model boats with masts, sails, shields, flags and dragon carved prows.
Prep 6 have completed their training and have signed up to being buddies. We wish them luck as they help everyone to have happy play times.
Prep 6 had a visit from Mr McLaughlin. They learnt a lot about life in Northern Ireland in the past and how success comes from hard work and perseverance.
Prep 6 pupils enjoyed a series of eight philosophy lessons delivered by two Queen’s University students. The girls composed philosophical questions and discussed differing opinions. We learnt a lot about mutual understanding and appreciating difference.
Prep 6 celebrated Chinese New Year by making rooster zodiac frames.
As part of Money Week 2016, Prep 6 enjoyed learning about budgeting, savings and accounts with Danske Bank. Ms Seainin Ward, Assistant Manager of Danske Bank in Donegal Square West led class workshops to highlight the importance of saving money and planning for larger purchases – very apt for this time of the year!
Prep 6 enjoyed their residential trip to Greenhill YMCA in Newcastle. They learnt many new skills and faced their fears when they took part in canoeing, climbing, team ropes courses, archery, orienteering and blind trails. Miss McLaughlin, Mrs Baker and Miss Allen would like to thank the girls for their excellent behaviour and for all their fun.
Good luck to our Prep 6 buddies in their important roles!
Prep 6 took part in a biodiversity study with Year 8 pupils and the Senior School biology department.
Prep 6 had a special visitor (Mr McLaughlin). He told us about life in Northern Ireland in the past. We learnt two very valuable lessons:
1. Try to keep practising music and sports.
2. You can still be happy and successful no matter what your score in exams.
Prep 6 completed internet research about their favourite county in Northern Ireland, as part of the Belfast Telegraph ‘Our Time, Our Place’ project. These are the tourist brochures that they produced in the computer suite.
Prep 6 and 7 recently had a taster of a new dance fitness craze ‘Bokwa’ with instructor Victoria Campbell. The work-out includes drawing numbers and letters with your feet whilst performing an energising routine. The girls enjoyed performing in the disco atmosphere to the current dance music and the disco lights!
Prep 6 wrote and posted thank you letter to the adults who helped us while on the school trip.
