Hockey Success 2018-2019

VCB Prep team had huge success in the NI hockey finals played at Stormont on 10 April 2019. In the group matches the team were undefeated winning 4 games and drawing two. Those results saw us proudly gain top place from the qualifying games. We went on to win the next 2 matches which then got us a top place in the semi-final. We were narrowly defeated 1 nil in a closely fought game which saw some outstanding skill and commitment from all players. VCB Prep finished as the third top hockey team in Northern Ireland. What a fabulous end to a season which saw the girls develop in all aspects of their hockey and no doubt will go from strength to strength in the future.

Prep 7 were runners up in the Belfast area tournament. The strong team won all their matches and also the semi final before being narrowly defeated by 1 goal in the final. They will now go through to the NI finals this month.

We currently have 32 girls attending hockey club on a Thursday where we are working on skills and match preparation.

P7 Athletics.jpeg

The Prep 7 team competed in the Belfast Indoor Athletics Championships during February and from this 5 pupils were selected by the coaches to represent Belfast in the N Ireland finals. The Belfast team consisted of 10 pupils from across the Primary Schools in the area, so it was a massive achievement that half of the team were representatives from the Prep School. The girls competed in the sprint, distance run, standing long jump and speed bounce events. The 5 girls who were selected were Anna Kennedy, Lucy Ly, Megan Carville, Aimee Hilman and Eva Kelly. Unfortunately, the Bangor team won on the day but congratulations to the girls for such a wonderful achievement at making the area squad.

Prep 7 competed in round 1 of the NI athletics Flahavens league cross country. The event was held in Antrim with over 500 competitors from across County Antrim.

Hockey Success 2017-2018

Prep 7 competed in the Belfast area tournament of the Primary Schools hockey cup. Prep played 6 matches in their section with convincing wins in all. We won the semi-final against Gilnahirk to qualify for the final against Penrhyn. At the end of full time it was 1:1 and no goals were scored during extra time so penalty runs had to be taken. Molly Young, Annie Irvine and Aimee Hilman stepped up to take these in what proved to be a very tense few moments.  At the end of this the score was 2:2 so next stage was sudden death.  Our captain Aimee Hilman agreed to take the first run and with skill and precision took the ball around the keeper to place a beautiful winning goal in the back corner and allow celebrations to begin.  Player of the tournament went to Annie Irvine.

At the NI Schools hockey finals held at Stormont on 18th April, the Prep team had the first match against Friends which they won 1-0.  The next match ended in a controversial 0-0 draw.  In the third match, the girls played some great hockey and beat Gibson 7-0.  The next match also resulted in a victory beating Millburn 2-0.  The only loss in this section was to Waringstown with a score of 0-1.  As a result, Prep finished second in their section, progressing to the cup.  In our next match we met Penrhyn once again, the same team we had played in the Belfast finals.  We won 2-0.  Our next match was with Armstrong from Armagh, sadly we lost 0-1.  Our progress depended on the result of Strathearn v Armstrong, won by the latter which meant that we had then been knocked out at the quarter final stage.  Armstrong went on to win the tournament.  This is a great achievement for the VCB Prep team who trained and played well together all year.  Well done girls!

Prep 6/7 hockey team enjoyed their first match of the season in a friendly against Stranmillis College.  The girls played with enthusiasm and maturity to win all 4 games. Well done to everyone and we look forward to our next two matches after half term on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd February.

The Prep Inter-house Hockey Tournament was played on a sunny afternoon on the new school Astroturf pitch, allowing our mini matches to flow in quick succession.

Pakenham house, captained by Aimee Hilman emerged as the tournament winner, followed by joint runners up Wellington, captain Lucy Ly and Richmond, captain Molly Young.

Many skilful hockey players emerged throughout the tournament and Mrs Henderson and Mrs Fernando made the joint decision to name Eva Kelly the ‘player of the tournament.’

Thank you to all the girls for taking part.
